Happy Birthday America!

July 4th, 2009 — This is just a great country to live in. Do you know of another place on God's Earth where you can enjoy the freedoms that we have in this country? I do not! We can go where we want, be what we want to be, peacefully assemble, celebrate the religion of our choice, vote, and so much more. Can you do that in Iran, North Korea, Japan, Iraq, Saudia Arabia...I think not.

With these freedoms comes a great responsibility. First and foremost we have the responsibility to thank and remember our forefathers for their insight to what freedom is about. They laid the foundation on which this country has been built. We have the responsibility to remember those veterans that have paid the price to keep our freedoms. Through the two greatest wars the world has ever known, their sacrifice was supreme. As I walk the halls of the VA clinic here or the hospital in Temple, TX I am reminded of their service and the toll it has taken on them. They do not complain and I firmly believe that each of the men and women that seek care in those facilities would answer the call if their bodies would allow. It is heart wrenching and warming all at the same time.

Unfortunately we remain a country of me, me, me in so many ways. When will that stop? How many 9/11's must we go through before we realize that freedom is not free? When will we as Americans stand up and say enough is enough and then do the right thing? Soon I hope!

As you celebrate this holiday each in your own way, which is a freedom you enjoy, I hope you will remember those that have gone before you and ensured this freedom of celebration remains in tact. Fly your flag and if you don't have one go by a flag as soon as you finish reading this blog. Our flag is what really matters!
