John Kelso — Humor Columnist

July 28, 2009 — John Kelso is a humor columnist for the Austin American-Statesman. He has been with the paper for I don't know how many years and has lived in South Austin it seems forever. Austin is divided by the Colorado river and what some folks like to call Lady Bird Lake in honor of President Lyndon Johnson's wife Lady Bird Johnson. It use to be known simply as Town Lake. Lake Austin also plays a part in the division of the city. Well if you are from "north of the river" you are considered by some as a yuppie to use a very old term. If you live south of the river you are known as a "bubba." I'm glad to say I am a "Bubba" and so is John Kelso.

Kelso weighs in on anything and everything and almost always puts a humorous spin on it from a Bubba's perspective. Every October when the annual University of Texas and University of Owfullyhoma...er I mean Oklahoma comes around he writes some hilarious stuff about OU. He is also unmerciful on Texas A&M Aggies. He can tell it like it is when it comes to state government and never misses a chance to put some politician in their place. He is also very mindful of the cultural environment of Austin...be it south or north. He never fails to bring out good stuff about the colorful people that call Austin home.

John Kelso has cancer. Yup, the Big "C" of the mouth. He has been going through radiation treatment and apparently it has been helping. In his column today http://www.statesman.com/news/content/news/stories/local/2009/07/28/0728kelso.html he talks about the treatment he has had and the effect on him. He is no doubt a fighter and a good man. I know many in this city read his column religiously the three times a week it appears in the paper. I hope the Big "C" will leave him alone and let him continue to enlighten us with his perspective and his humor. It's what really matters!
